What we do

Mental health and substance use care, under one roof

People managing both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder shouldn’t have to navigate two separate systems. At NorthStar, one coordinated team handles both.

Outpatient Mental Health

Individual, group and family therapy for adults and adolescents, alongside psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management. Our clinicians treat depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder and serious mental illness.

Substance Use Treatment

Outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs, with assessment and level-of-care planning based on the ASAM Criteria — so treatment intensity matches what someone actually needs, and changes as they do.

Why we started

A six-week wait is not care

NorthStar opened in 2014 after our founder watched a member of his own family go through opioid use disorder — and discovered that in a city the size of Detroit, there was almost nowhere to send him that didn’t have a six-week waiting list.

We started with six providers. Twelve years later we’re a team of 68 serving more than 4,200 people a year, and that founding frustration still sets the standard we hold ourselves to.

We answer the phone. We get people scheduled. We stay with them through the parts of recovery that aren’t linear.

“I’d been passed between three places before I got here. NorthStar was the first one where the therapist and the psychiatrist actually talked to each other about me.” — Patient, outpatient program (shared with permission)
