Mental health and substance use care under one roof, coordinated by one team.
Every person who comes to NorthStar starts with an assessment. From there we build a plan together — what level of care makes sense, how often we meet, and who else needs to be part of it. Plans change as people do, and we reassess regularly rather than waiting for something to go wrong.
Our largest program. We provide individual, group and family therapy for adults and adolescents, alongside psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management. Our clinicians treat depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, and serious mental illness, and we work with people who are managing more than one condition at a time.
We provide outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment for substance use disorders. Assessment and level-of-care decisions follow the ASAM Criteria, so the intensity of treatment matches what a person actually needs — and changes when their needs change.
Our SUD program is integrated with our mental health services. People who are managing both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition see one coordinated team rather than being referred back and forth.
Expanding in 2027. We have applied for state funding to add medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, which would bring four additional prescribers to our team. We expect to hear on that award later this year and will update this page when we do.
Treatment doesn't work well when someone is worried about where they're sleeping. Our case managers help with benefits enrollment, housing and employment referrals, transportation, and coordination with primary care, probation, child welfare and other providers involved in a person's life.
Our certified peer support specialists have their own lived experience of recovery. They provide recovery coaching, help people connect with community supports, and offer family support for relatives who are trying to help someone they love. For many of our patients this is the part of the program that keeps them engaged.
Since 2022 we have provided on-site counseling at three partner schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Students are seen during the school day, which removes the transportation and scheduling barriers that keep many families from getting care at all.
Secure video appointments are available across all of our outpatient services for patients located anywhere in Michigan. Many of our patients alternate — in person when it helps, video when work or childcare makes a trip across town impossible.
Call us or send an appointment request and our intake coordinator will get back to you, usually the same business day. We'll ask a few questions about what you're looking for and what insurance you have, then schedule an assessment.
Most new patients are seen within a week.
We are a contracted provider with the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and accept Michigan Medicaid, Medicare, and most major commercial plans. A limited number of self-pay slots are available on a sliding scale.
If you aren't sure what your plan covers, call and our billing team will check for you before your first visit.
